  3. Nice post. Your users might also find real user reviews for all the major NAC solutions on IT Central Station to be helpful.

According to the IT Central Station tech professional community, ForeScout CounterACT is the #1 NAC solution. This user writes, “We did not have a NAC prior to ForeScout. It provides constant monitoring of the endpoints either through an agent or periodic monitoring with a local admin account. This makes posturing very easy to do.” You can read the rest of his review, as well as find out what other users have to say about this solution here: https://goo.gl/79P9xm.

    1. I don’t think you will be able to do this in Windows, because you need to setup a network firewall/router setup. For this best os would be Linux or FreeBSD.

    1. I created this list, long back when I was working on a captive portal device. Now I even don’t know home many of the open source projects are live and home many are dead. In the mean while I have added the links suggested by the readers, that’s it.

If you can give me the updated list I will be happy publish the updated one.

      1. Hi, ALCASAR is a french captive portal/NAC solution. Based on Mageia (a Mandriva fork), it regroups some tools which make this solution so powerfull.
Documentations and language are available in english and this solution is open source and free. You’ll find it on http://www.alcasar.net/en.

        Sorry for my bad english,
        Regards

      1. Would you consider free versions of the commercial products as open source?

It would be better to classify the captive portals into two categories:
        1. Captive portal with open source code
        2. Free version of captive portal software

  17. hi,
I want to create a captive portal from scratch. I wondered if you could help me, introduce me sources and stuff. please contact me if you could.

    1. Hi, I think I can help you. most of the captive portals are based on Linux. So it is simply building your own customized minimal Linux OS with only and the right tools that you need.

So it requires quite deep knowledge in Linux and Customization. (refer http://www.linuxfromscratch.org to create your own custom distro.

Once you have your custom distro then it is simply adding the required application on top of it. In fact you can even use distros like ubuntu, debinan, fedora etc…
